About
Tia Greenwood is a spirited cellist with infectious energy and passion for traditional music. Known for her fluid and relaxed style, and innovative approach to trad cello, Tia has positioned the cello as a versatile and valuable contributor in any fiddle music setting by combining tune playing with chords and rhythm. She is especially passionate about exploring the instrument's role as a lead melodic voice, bringing the fluidity, bowings, ornaments, expression and authenticity of the fiddle to the cello. She is currently working on her debut album which will feature cello in that way.
Hailing from Victoria, British Columbia, she was drawn to fiddle music from a young age through fiddle camps, and playing with Daniel Lapp's BC Fiddle Orchestra and Ivonne Hernandez's Coastline Fiddle Ensemble. Her playing is influenced especially by cellists Eric Wright and Natalie Haas, fiddlers such as Jenna Moynihan, and many others whose recordings she studied devotedly in her journey to mastering various techniques and playing styles.
In 2025, Tia was awarded a full-tuition scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. During her first year, she studied with renowned musicians including Jenna Moynihan, Bruce Molsky, Jeremy Harman, Greg Liszt, Natalie Haas, Jeremy Kittel, Kimberley Fraser, and Brittany Haas.
Tia is deeply committed to sharing her love of music through performance, recording, teaching, and building community. She has performed alongside and recorded with many people from across the traditional music scene and is actively involved in her communities as a mentor, teaching private lessons and group cello classes. As an emerging voice in the Celtic and traditional music world, Tia uses her music as a medium for spreading joy, kindness, positivity, and bringing people together.
